first time campers
Trusted by Families. Loved by First-Time Campers.
Choosing an overnight camp for the first time is a big step—for both kids and parents. At Camp Jewell YMCA, we’ve spent more than 125 years helping first-time campers feel welcome, confident, and excited about spending their first summer away from home.
Whether you’re looking for a first-time sleepaway camp near Connecticut, a YMCA overnight camp, or a beginner-friendly two-week camp experience, Camp Jewell offers the perfect combination of structure, safety, and adventurous outdoor fun.
Why Families Choose Camp Jewell
A Warm, Inclusive Community
Every camper is welcomed the moment they arrive—especially those attending for the very first time. Our staff is trained to support:
Campers who have never been away from home
Campers attending without a friend
Campers who feel shy or nervous
Campers easing into independence
Creating a sense of belonging from day one is at the core of our YMCA mission.
Why Most First-Time Campers Thrive in a Two-Week Session
1. It takes time to settle in.
The first 24–48 hours are an adjustment. In a one-week session, just as a camper gets comfortable, the session is nearly over. Two-week campers hit their stride early and enjoy deeper friendships and more confidence.
2. Skill progression is better.
Activities like horseback riding, archery, boating, or climbing offer better learning, mastery, and enjoyment with more time to practice.
3. Stronger friendships = stronger experience.
Two weeks allow cabin groups to bond, build trust, and feel like a true community—something first-time campers benefit from tremendously.
4. Fewer transitions, more stability.
For kids who are new to being away from home, consistency is key. Two weeks provide routine, comfort, and a steady pace that reduces anxiety and homesickness.
5. More memories and emotional growth.
Camp is transformative. The longer duration gives campers the space to grow, discover independence, and return home proud of what they accomplished.
