A CAMP FOR ADOPTED CHILDREN

At Camp Jewell, we understand that adopted children often have unique questions about their family stories, such as “Why is my family different?” or “Who are my real parents, and why did they give me away?” These are common and natural questions for children adopted internationally, domestically, or through foster care. While each child’s story is different, many share similar feelings and uncertainties.

Camp Clio at Camp Jewell provides a safe and supportive environment where adopted children can explore their birth stories and connect with others who share similar experiences. In this nurturing, judgment-free space, they can find comfort in knowing they are not alone.

Since 2012, Camp Clio has offered adopted children, ages 9-15, the chance to make friends, have fun, and thrive in a traditional camp setting. Held during our 3rd Session, Clio Village is a special place where adopted counselors, who share their cabins and serve as role models, help children create lasting memories and connections in a fun, old-fashioned camp atmosphere.

At Clio Village, campers enjoy all the traditional camp activities and programs, with one key difference: every camper is adopted.

Our program fosters a positive and supportive environment where campers can explore their thoughts, emotions, and personal expression through movement and crafts. This helps increase self-awareness and boost self-esteem. The adopted counselors at Clio Village serve as role models, facilitating adoption conversations by sharing their own experiences. Within this community, campers are free to share their adoption stories with others who understand.

All counselors and staff receive training from social workers who specialize in adoption issues, learning how to facilitate meaningful conversations about adoption and guide them in a positive direction.

Once a session, Clio campers and counselors come together for a special discussion period exclusively for adopted children. Led by licensed social workers from the Center for Adoption Support and Education (CASE), these relaxed sessions offer the perfect opportunity for informal discussions about adoption. Campers can choose to actively participate or simply listen, with attendance being entirely optional.
