Every YMCA camp offers something special—but Camp Jewell’s mix of history, community, and program depth makes it unique.
Campers live in cozy, rustic cabins grouped by age and village. Each cabin includes:
8–10 campers
At least two trained counselors
Access to nearby bathhouses
Porch space for relaxing and connecting with friends
Our counselors are carefully selected and trained in youth development, safety procedures, leadership, and creating an inclusive cabin environment. They stay with the cabin group throughout the day—guiding activities, supporting routines, and helping campers feel comfortable, confident, and connected.
Cabin life is where many campers make their closest friendships and favorite memories.
Camp Jewell is an excellent choice for first-time campers! Every summer, many campers join us with no prior overnight camp experience.
Here’s how we help them succeed:
Welcoming counselors who guide campers through each part of the day.
Clear routines that make camp feel predictable and comfortable.
Buddy-based activities to help campers make friends quickly.
Cabin traditions—like nightly “embers” and team challenges—that build community.
Parent communication options, including photos, updates, and our camp office support.
Most first-time campers end up feeling right at home by the end of Day 1—and can’t wait to come back the next year.

What Our Campers and Parents Say
Why Camp jewell?
What are the benefits of attending an Overnight Summer Camp
Why is Attending Summer Camp Beneficial for Children?
1. Opportunity for New Experiences
At summer camp, children are immersed in opportunities to try a myriad of activities, ranging from arts and crafts to adventure sports. This exposure to diverse experiences helps broaden their horizons and ignites new interests that they may not encounter in their everyday environment.
2. Development of Essential Life Skills
Being away from home encourages kids to develop crucial life skills. As they navigate living with peers and engage in group activities, they cultivate independence, problem-solving abilities, and self-confidence. These skills are invaluable as they transition into adulthood.
3. Building Lifelong Friendships
Camps offer a community where children can meet people from different backgrounds, fostering friendships that often last a lifetime. Through team-building activities and shared experiences, children learn how to communicate effectively and work collaboratively.
4. Encouragement of Self-Expression
Unique from the school environment, camps provide an atmosphere where children feel comfortable expressing their true selves without fear of judgment. It’s a place where they can embrace individuality and feel a sense of belonging, often leading to personal growth and increased self-esteem.
5. Coping with Homesickness
For many kids, camp is the first experience away from family. This distance teaches them to cope with homesickness by forming emotional resilience and adapting to new surroundings. Over time, they become more comfortable with being away from home, further strengthening their independence.
Discover What Sets Our Summer Camp Apart
1. Core Values That Connect
At the heart of what makes our summer camp exceptional are our foundational values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. These principles aren’t just words—they’re the everyday actions that form a nurturing environment. Campers experience a unique sense of belonging as they form meaningful connections with peers and staff alike, learning to embody these values both at camp and beyond.
2. Passionate Leadership
Our camp stands out thanks to our extraordinary team of counselors. Each one is deeply committed to providing an enriching camp experience and is a product of a highly selective leadership program. With most counselors having once been campers themselves, they bring a genuine understanding and enthusiasm that inspires and reassures both parents and campers. Their dedication to mentorship helps shape future leaders and exceptional citizens.
3. Rich Traditions
Our legacy stretches back over 120 years, fostering friendships and memories that truly last a lifetime. Since 1901, campers have been sharing unforgettable moments and creating bonds that endure long after the campfire embers fade.
