10 Questions to Ask Before Sending Your Child to Sleepaway Camp

Choosing a sleepaway camp is a big decision, one that can shape a child’s confidence, independence, and love for the outdoors for years to come. Whether you’re a first-time camp parent or a returning family exploring new options, asking the right questions can make all the difference.

At Camp Jewell YMCA, we know how important it is to feel confident that your child will be safe, supported, and have the best summer ever. Here are the 10 most important questions to ask before sending your child to overnight camp — plus our answers, straight from the shores of Triangle Lake.

1. What makes this camp unique?

Every camp has its own personality, traditions, and community spirit. At Camp Jewell YMCA, our 125-year history has built generations of campers who call this place their “second home.” From horseback riding and archery to canoeing and campfires, every experience is designed to help kids grow in confidence, make lifelong friends, and discover who they are.

2. How are campers supervised?

Safety always comes first. Our staff-to-camper ratio is low, and every counselor completes extensive training in youth development, behavior management, CPR, first aid, and emergency procedures. We also have a full-time Health Center staffed by registered nurses to provide around-the-clock care.

3. What’s a typical day like?

Campers wake up to the sounds of nature and jump into a day full of activity! Mornings are for swimming, riding, and adventure; afternoons bring choice activities like crafts, sports, and boating; evenings end with songs, skits, and campfires. Every day at Camp Jewell balances structure, freedom, and fun.

4. How does the camp handle homesickness?

Homesickness is completely normal — and we’re experts at helping campers through it. Our counselors receive special training to support kids emotionally, encourage connections, and build resilience. By day two or three, most campers are so busy making friends they forget they were ever nervous!

5. What are the sleeping arrangements like?

Camp Jewell’s cozy cabins each house up to 10 campers with two counselors. Every cabin has electricity, screened windows, and access to modern bathrooms nearby. Cabin life is where friendships are forged and memories are made. Check out Camp Jewells facilities.

6. How are meals handled?

Three delicious meals are served family-style in our Dining Hall overlooking the lake. We offer kid-friendly favorites along with healthy options, salad bars, and allergy-aware meal plans. Our food service team is trained in handling dietary restrictions safely.

7. What programs and activities are offered?

From horseback riding at our Ranch Camp to climbing, boating, nature exploration, and arts, there’s something for every child. Campers can try new things and build confidence while pursuing the activities they love most. Check out the activities that Camp Jewell has to offer.

8. What is the camp’s philosophy on electronics?

We believe in a “tech-free” camp experience. Without phones or screens, campers can fully connect with nature, their friends, and themselves. It’s amazing how much more creative, social, and confident kids become when unplugged.

9. How does the camp communicate with parents?

We know parents miss their campers! You’ll receive regular updates, photos, and letters during your child’s stay. Our camp office is always available to answer questions or share updates if needed — because partnership with parents is key to every child’s success.

10. How do I know if my child is ready for overnight camp?

If your child enjoys sleepovers, group activities, and new adventures — they’re ready! Even if there’s some hesitation, our supportive staff help every camper adjust quickly. Many first-time campers arrive nervous and leave begging to stay longer. Find out more about our sleepaway camps.
