How Tiered Pricing Works at YMCA Camps (And How We Keep Camp Affordable)

Understanding a system designed to support every family.

Choosing a summer camp is one of the most important decisions a parent makes—and cost naturally plays a big part. At YMCA camps, we believe every child deserves the chance to experience the confidence, friendship, and independence that come from a meaningful camp experience. That’s why many Y camps, including Camp Jewell YMCA, use a tiered pricing system.

Tiered pricing can feel unfamiliar at first, so this guide breaks down how it works, why we use it, and how it helps keep camp affordable and accessible for more families.

What Is Tiered Pricing?

Tiered pricing is a simple, transparent system that lets families choose the camp fee that works best for their budget—without impacting their child’s experience.

Every camper receives the same programs, cabins, activities, meals, instruction, and level of care, regardless of which tier their family selects.

Most YMCA camps offer three tiers (sometimes more), each representing a different level of financial flexibility:

  • Tier 3 – The lowest rate, supported by donors, sponsors, and the YMCA Annual Campaign.

  • Tier 2 – A partially subsidized rate for families who can contribute more but still need support.

  • Tier 1 – The standard, most sustainable rate that reflects the true cost of camp.

Families self-select the tier that fits their financial situation—no application, no paperwork, no questions asked.

Why Do YMCA Camps Use Tiered Pricing?

YMCA camps operate as mission-driven nonprofit organizations, not profit-focused businesses. Our goal is to make camp possible for as many children as we can.

Tiered pricing helps us:

1. Keep Camp Accessible to All

Families have different financial realities. Our tiered system ensures that cost never becomes the primary barrier to attending.

2. Honor the YMCA’s Mission

For over 125 years, YMCA camps have promised to strengthen community and support youth development. Tiered pricing is one of the most practical ways we live that mission.

3. Balance Affordability and Sustainability

Offering multiple tiers keeps camp accessible while also ensuring long-term stability, allowing camps to maintain safe facilities, hire talented staff, and continue improving programs.

How to Choose Your Tier

When registering, families simply select the tier that aligns with their budget. There’s no approval process, just an honest choice based on what you can afford.

A common guideline looks like this:

  • Choose Tier 3 if you need the most support.

  • Choose Tier 2 if you can pay a bit more but still need a discount.

  • Choose Tier 1 if you can comfortably pay the full rate and want to help sustain camp for all families.

Many YMCA camps also offer additional financial assistance (at Camp Jewell we call this Tier 4) for households with specific income or life circumstances. At Camp Jewell YMCA, for example, families with a household income under $100,000 qualify for financial aid, and additional scholarship support is available when needed—thanks to our donors and Annual Campaign.

What’s Included in Camp Pricing?

Regardless of tier, YMCA camp fees typically include:

  • Cabin lodging

  • All meals and snacks

  • Daily supervision from trained staff

  • All program areas (waterfront, ropes courses, arts, sports, nature, horseback riding depending on camp)

  • Evening programs and special events

  • 24/7 medical care access

  • Camp T-shirt or other welcome swag (varies by camp)

The experience is identical for every camper.

How Tiered Pricing Helps Us Keep Camp Affordable

Tiered pricing only works because of the strength of the YMCA community. Here’s how:

1. Donors & Fundraising

Support from alumni, families, community partners, and foundations helps offset the true cost of camp—making Tier 4, 3 and Tier 2 possible.

2. YMCA Annual Campaign

Every year, YMCA volunteers and staff raise money to ensure no child is turned away due to financial need. This campaign directly funds camp scholarships and tiered pricing subsidies.

3. Families Who Choose Tier 1

When families who are able choose the full rate, they directly help support another child whose family needs assistance.

4. Long-Term Sustainability

Tiered pricing helps us cover rising costs—food, facilities, staff training—without drastically increasing prices for every family.

The Bottom Line: Camp Belongs to Everyone

Tiered pricing reflects two of the most important values of YMCA camping: honesty and responsibility. Families who are able contribute more; those who need help contribute less. And together, we ensure that every child—no matter their background—has the chance to experience the joy and growth that camp provides.
