A Legacy of Belonging • 1901–2026

For 125 summers, Camp Jewell YMCA has been a place where friendships spark, confidence grows, and generations return to find their second home.

Our journey began on the shores of Tunxis Island, traveled north to the forests of Swanzey, New Hampshire, and eventually made its way to the foothills of the Berkshires Colebrook, Connecticut, where camp thrives today.

From canvas tents to cozy cabins, from simple waterfront days to the expansive year-round programming we know now, every step of our path has been shaped by the campers, counselors, families, and alumni who carry the spirit of camp wherever life leads them.

Scroll through the timeline to follow the memories, milestones, and magic that make Camp Jewell YMCA the place “where you belong.”

Because 125 Summers of Friendship Deserve to Be Remembered

As we celebrate 125 years of Camp Jewell YMCA, we want to hear your story! Share a favorite memory, photo, or video — and help keep the campfire burning bright for generations to come.

S’more Than a Century of Fun

1901 A SMALL BEGINNING

THE BEGINNING

Camp Jewell was founded by the Hartford YMCA in 1901 on the shores of Tunxis Island in Long Island Sound with three tents, cooking utensils and a pair of rowboats. It was named after Colonel Charles A. Jewell, the president of the Hartford Y at the time, because he contributed $150 toward those supplies for that inaugural year of camp.

1902 THE MOVE TO SWANZEY

Clarke Pomeroy, an avid California outdoorsman, loved biking, camping, and deep-woods adventure. In 1902, he biked to southwestern New Hampshire and discovered Lake Swanzey, where a Worcester YMCA boys’ group welcomed him to camp along the northern shore. After several days exploring its towering forests and crystal-clear water, he knew he’d found something special.

The new site was an instant success—50 boys came in 1902 and 75 the next summer. Most traveled by train to New Hampshire, then biked, hiked, or rode horseback to camp, where they lived off the land and built lifelong friendships.

1955 THE COLEBROOK ERA BEGINS

As Lake Swanzey became a more popular vacation destination, the tranquility that made Camp Jewell special began to fade and so the search for a new location began. In 1951 the Colebrook property was purchased for $55,000 and construction was complete in time for the summer of 1955.
